Uttarakhand became the 27th state of the Republic of India on 9th November 2000 and this state is carved out of Uttar Pradesh. It occupies 17.3% of India's total land area with 51,125 sq km. Airports
Jolly Grant Airport, located in Dehradun is the main airport in the state of Uttarakhand. Two other air strips are the Chakrata Air Force Base near Dehradun and Pant Nagar Airport (Udhamsingh Nagar) there. Chakrata base is used mainly by the air force and Pant Nagar Airport allows domestic flight landings.
Rail junctions
Laksar Junction Railway Station lies within the city and it was first connected with city of Haridwar through branch line in 1886, when the Awadh and Rohilakhand Railway line was extended through Roorkee to Saharanpur, this was later extended to Dehradun in 1900.

Uttarakhand state is located in the northern part of India and has a total geographic area of 51,125 sq kms. It is one of the most beautiful and religious place in India whose charm was rediscovered by the British officers. Moreover, the co-ordinates of Uttarakhand are 28o C 43' N to 31o C 27' N (Latitude) and 77o C 34' E to 81o C 02' E (Longitude). Allmost entire region of Uttaranchal is covered by mountains (approximately 93%) and forests show up on about 64% of the mountains.
Weather
Uttarakhand has two distinct climatic regions that are the predominant hilly terrain and the smaller plain region. Climatic condition of the plains is very similar to its counterpart in the Gangetic plain. Summers are extremely hot with temperatures that are going over the 40°C mark and a lot of humidity. And Winters can be chilly with temperatures going below 5°C at times.
Transport
Local transport in Uttarakhand basically depends upon State Transportation Buses and Shared taxis. Moreover, in plains the 'Rickshaw' culture is still prevalent, on hilly terrains you may also get to enjoy a 'Tonga or Pony' ride. Furthermore, the transportation is comparatively easier in the plains as compared to the steep hills where there are frequent landslides and a speed of more than 25/hour can be dangerous. Private hiring can be a little costlier but certainly a more comfortable means than the public transport, which is jam-packed and overcrowded.
