Manipur


About Manipur:-
Manipur means "A jeweled land" nestle deep within a lush green corner of North East India. It seems much like an exquisite work of  art  executed by superb hands of  Nature and  it is indeed a state of exquisite natural  beauty and splendors. It is surrounded by blue hills with an oval shaped valley at the centre, rich in art and tradition and surcharged  with  nature's  pristine glory. Manipur state lies on a melting pot of culture. The birth place of Manipur is Polo. Manipur is a part of India both from the point of view of geography and culture. This state never lost its basic link with the mainstream of the Indian culture. The culture of Manipur has been a part of Indian culture and it accepted aspects of Indian culture and transmitted them to Burma, China and other lands of East Asia. On political grounds Manipur can hardly be separated from India.

Manipur represents population of two ethnic groups, the people who inhabit the hills called the "Nagas" and those who inhabit the valley called the "Meiteis". The hills of manipur are also inhabited by the group called the "Kukis". Imphal is the political capital of Manipur, which is also a suitable place for manipur travel. Earliest recorded history dates to 900AD. In the course of its history there have been several invasions from Myanmar (Burma) which borders with Manipur and numerous clashes with the Nagas. In 1826, Manipur state was brought into India by the treaty of Yandavo by Raja Jai Singh with the British at the end of the Indo-Burmese war. This followed a dispute in accession to the throne. With the intervention of the British the dispute was settled and in 1891 Churachand was nominated the Raja and it came under British rule as a princely state. During World War II Imphal was occupied by the Japanese and after Indian independence Manipur state became a Union Territory and subsequently achieved statehood in January 21,1972.

Location:-
Manupur is situated between latitudes 23.80 o N to 25.68 o N and longitudes 93.03oE to 94.78o E, it covers a total geographical area of 22,327 Sq. Km. Of the total area, about nine-tenths constitute the hills which surrounds the remaining one-tenth valley. This is one of the border states in the North-Eastern part of India, which is bounded by Nagaland on the north, Assam on the west and Mizoram on the south and along the east it shares a 352 Km. long international boundary with Myanmar.

Weather:-
The state enjoys all the three seasons of summers, winters, and monsoons; precipitation dominates the valley for most of the year. Summers prevail from the month of March till May, when temperature reaches to the max of 32°C and it is never too hot in Manipur. Moreover, monsoons formally arrive in the month of June and drench the state with heavy rain showers up to September. October and November, more or less, remain dry. Winter season extends from December to February, when the temperature usually drops down to 0°C.

Airport:-
There is a single airport in Manipur, which is located in the capital city of Imphal. Regular flights arrive and depart from the Imphal Airport connecting the city with the important cities of the country. The airport in Imphal flies flights at cheaper rates and ensures a less time consuming journey to its passengers.

Rail junction:-
Manipur state is included in the railway map of India with the opening of a rail head at Jiribam in May 1990. It is 225 km from Imphal. Dimapur, 215 km from Imphal is the nearest rail-head. Prime Minister of India laid foundation stone for a new railway line ( Jiribam – Tupul Railway line) on 20 November 2004.

Transport:-
The capital of Manipur, Imphal is joined by road (NH-39) with Nagaland on the north, and Myanmar on the east, Assam on the west by NH-53, and Mizoram on the south by NH-150. This state has 7,599 km of roads, both metalled and unmetalled and the length of roads consists of National Highway 967 km, State Highway 675 km, District roads 1,977 km and Village roads 4,947 km.
